Back to School

This is a stimulating one-week programme to prepare you for a successful year at school. The course starts with a leadership and teambuilding day.

You will participate in lessons that focus on literacy, numeracy, current affairs and global issues as well as developing key skills that will help you be a more successful student.

We will help you improve your study skills whatever subjects you are interested in and encourage you to become an independent and confident learner. This will stand you in good stead for GCSEs, A-levels, IB, university and beyond.

Back to School programme is for you:

  • if you are a British or international student aged 13 to 18
  • starting in a British boarding school or college this September
  • considering a boarding school education in the future
  • wanting a refresher to get back into good study habits before starting school
  • wanting an end-of-summer course with a difference

Morning classes

The aim of the morning classes is to help you improve your study skills whatever subjects you are interested in and to encourage you to become an independent and confident learner. This will stand you in good stead for GCSEs, A Levels, IB Diploma, university and beyond. You will participate in literacy, numeracy, current affairs and global issues.

Literacy

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)defines literacy as the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate and compute, using printed and written materials associated with varying contexts. Literacy involves a continuum of learning in enabling individuals to achieve their goals, to develop their knowledge and potential, and to participate fully in their community and wider society. At Academic Summer you will develop you literacy skills through an interesting and varied curriculum.

Numeracy

Numeracy is the ability to reason and to apply simple numerical concepts. At Academic Summer you will explore key mathematic areas that you need to know whatever subjects you are studying. We cover functional maths that will help you with your everyday life as well as with your studies.

Current Affairs and Global Issues

You will develop your knowledge of the world around you by studying current affairs and global issues, the lack of which is something teachers often identify as a weakness in their students. At Academic Summer Plus you will address this by adding depth to your understanding of your school subjects, particularly business studies, economics, sciences and English.

Afternoon workshops

You will participate in practical and fun workshops on topics relevant to your success now and in your future. These include financial literacy, careers planning, personal and Internet safety, First Aid and life saving skill and are run by experts in their fields.

Boarding / life skills workshops

In these workshops, you will learn how to live with other people and important live skills you can take with you to boarding school and university – and will also benefit you in your home life.

The activity and leisure programme

The programme starts with a leadership & teambuilding day. The purpose of the activity and leisure programme is threefold. First it is an opportunity for you to strengthen and enjoy your friendships in the group. Second, you will develop your independence in a new culture. Finally, you will engage in typical boarding school activities that may push your boundaries and make you feel uncomfortable but will help you develop as a person – this is all part of the fun!

This programme is at Sidcot School from 19th August to 26th August 2017.

If you are starting in a boarding school at the beginning of September then we can help you find host family accommodation from 26th August until your term starts at your new school.
